Book Snippets, Part Four

Guess what!

It’s a new Book Snippets!

There’s no continuity between these, but if you want to read the other ones, go here for part 1, here for part 2, and here for part three.

So basically, this is a piece of the book I’m writing. If you already know the basic idea of the book, skip this and go straight to the writing. If you don’t: okay so this exists in a world of Psychics. My protagonist, Jasmine Evans, works in a branch of the government completely comprised of Psychics. They help the FBI and they’re pretty kick-butt. Then Jasmine discovers that a secret organization is being run right under the Psychic employees’ noses; she forms a rebellion and there’s a big battle. Who wins? Well, I guess you’ll see when I’m finished writing the book, won’t you? 😉

Okay! Here’s the snippet. The rebellion has been formed, it’s gradually growing, and they’re starting to plan things when this snippet takes place. Enjoy!

My phone rang. I jumped. I hadn’t gotten a lot of activity lately. I picked up the receiver.
“Hello?”
“Evans. Office, please. Now.” It was Beckham.
“Okay,” I said. Then there was a dial tone in my ear. I rolled my eyes and left my desk.
A minute or two later I was sitting across from Beckham. I folded my hands in my lap to keep from fidgeting. Beckham’s silent stare was putting me on edge.
I cleared my throat. “Did you want to talk to me about something, Mr. Beckham?”
“I’m considering putting you back on assignment.” That was all he said.
He had no idea how much that made me soar. I quelled my excitement. “I’m honored to hear that, sir.”
“I’m still keeping my eye on you, Evans. I just can’t afford to keep you on desk work. Your … unique abilities are quite painful to do without.”
“Understood.”
“Good. Out.”
I did as I was told. As soon as I was back in my own office, I shut the door behind me. I shoved my fist in my mouth to muffle the scream of excitement that escaped.
I was back to work!

———————————–

I strode down the hall quickly. There was no way I was going to be late for my first client in weeks. I couldn’t risk getting put on desk duty again; being close to Beckham again was just as important to TASE as having my work back was to me.
I swung open the door and froze where I stood.
Sitting at the table was one of TASE’s spies, a short, stocky man. An empath. Why was he here?
He looked up at me and smiled faintly. He gave me one nod. He must have been caught somewhere that he wasn’t meant to be.

Oooh! Cliffhanger! Aren’t I the evilest? 😀 Anywho, tell me what you thought in the comments! Tips? Critique? I wanna hear it! Also like the post if you, ya know, liked it, follow for more, and don’t do those things if you don’t wanna! Have a great evening, citizens of the interwebz.
