Thar ya be.
Okay, if you’re new to this series, I’m writing a book. I sometimes post little pieces of it for you guys to read, cause … why not? It’s about an alternate universe where Psychics exist, secret government plot, blah blah blah … I explain it in both Part 1 and 2, so if you really want the whole dealio, starting from the beginning would probably be your best course of action.
This scene, as you’ll probably notice, is the exact same scene as the one from Book Snippets, Part 2! That is because I have changed that scene. It wasn’t quite right, so it is now new and improved. See if you can spot the differences! 🙂 Enjoy.
I rubbed my sweaty palms on my jeans in an attempt to dry them. Sixty people were waiting inside that door, and they expected me—me, of all people—to lead them. Chris walked past me to go inside the cramped meeting room of his apartment complex. I felt him squeeze my shoulder reassuringly before he went inside with everyone else.
I took a deep breath and pushed the door open. Sixty hopeful, nervous, and determined faces turned to look at me. I forced a smile. I only hoped it didn’t look too manufactured. I cleared my throat.
“So, I’m reasonably sure you all know why we’re here. If you don’t, you’re the custodian and I’ll have to ask you to leave.” There were some laughs at that, and my smile came easier. Then I became serious. “As you all know, we’ve been lied to. By the people and organization we thought we could trust.” The room sobered at that. “They’ve manipulated us. Used our powers against us.” An angry murmur rippled through the room. I took another breath before continuing. “We’re all here because we want to do something about it. I have had some people tell me that they want me to lead this effort; if I were to do so, I see us as gathering information for a few months, and building our force. When we have enough information and people, we confront Beckham, Mankel, and their associates. We will, of course, attempt to settle things peacefully, but we must also be prepared to take offensive action if necessary. I don’t know that I am the best for this job, but that is what I would lead us to do, and, if you want me, I’ll do it.”
The room went completely silent.
I held my breath.
A petite telepath stood. “I will follow you,” she said firmly.
A pyrokinetic stood next. “I will follow you.”
The room became a wave of standing people, all proclaiming “I will follow you” at varying levels of volume. Soon, the entire room was on their feet. I caught Alanna’s eye and saw that she was beaming up at me. I blinked tears out of my eyes and cleared my throat.
“Then I’ll lead you.”
A cheer rose up from the Psychics in front of me until it reached its crescendo.
I bowed my head to the crowd of standing people before me, and I felt a weight settle on my chest. I set my jaw. I would lead them.
So, there you go! Lemme know what you think in the comments. If you read Part 2, let me know if you like the changes or it still doesn’t feel quite right. 🙂 As always, like, comment, and follow if you are so inclined! Thankee kindly!
